The 470 km run covers six distinct environments: city traffic, the Mlolongo stretch, the fast dual carriageway to Mtito Andei, the rough section beyond Sultan Hamud, the steep Mackinnon descent, and the humid coast approach. Each taxes different systems.
The Checklist
- Shock absorbers: Bounce-test each corner; oil weep on any unit — replace before travel. The corrugated section near Sultan Hamud will destroy a leaking shock within 50 km.
- Tyres: Minimum 3 mm tread; check spare; inflate to load-rated pressure (+4 psi for full load). A blow-out at 120 km/h on the Athi River dual carriageway is fatal.
- Brake pads: Minimum 4 mm — the Mackinnon descent is the hardest brake test on this route. Brake fade on a loaded car going downhill with worn pads is a documented cause of fatalities on this stretch.
- Alignment & balance: Vibration above 100 km/h is a safety risk at night on this highway. It also fatigues the driver faster.
- Coolant & oil: Top up; inspect under the car for drips before you leave. The coast humidity plus a full engine load will expose any cooling weakness.
- Lights: All indicators and brake lights — traffic police operate actively on this corridor, particularly at the Machakos turnoff and the Mariakani weighbridge.
